On the 29th of August 2023, it is with a heavy heart and profound sadness that we mourn the loss of one of Nigeria's most influential figures, the late Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi. Renowned as the designer of the Nigerian flag, Akinkunmi's passing marks the end of an era and leaves behind a remarkable legacy that will forever be etched in the annals of Nigerian history.

Born on May 10, 1936, in Ibadan, Akinkunmi displayed exceptional talent and creativity from a young age. His passion for art and design led him to unveil his masterpiece in 1959 while he was studying at Norwood Technical College in London, United Kingdom. Little did he know at the time that his creation would come to symbolize the unity, strength, and aspirations of an entire nation.

The Nigerian flag, with its vibrant green, symbolizes Nigeria's agricultural wealth, while the white stripe represents the nation's commitment to peace. Akinkunmi's design effortlessly captured the essence of Nigeria, subtly blending culture, history, and national identity into a powerful symbol that resonates with Nigerians across generations.

Akinkunmi's contribution to Nigeria's history cannot be overstated. His artwork stands as a testament to the struggles, aspirations, and achievements of the Nigerian people. From the fight for independence to the pursuit of unity and progress, the Nigerian flag serves as a constant reminder of the challenges overcome and the possibilities that lie ahead.

Beyond his iconic design, Akinkunmi was a man of integrity, humility, and unwavering patriotism. Despite his global recognition, he remained deeply rooted in his Nigerian heritage and dedicated his life to serving his beloved country.

His passing represents a tremendous loss for Nigeria and the wider world. However, as we mourn the departure of this great man, we are reminded of his enduring legacy and the profound impact he has had on our collective identity.

Today, as the Nigerian flag continues to soar proudly, we pay homage to the vision, artistry, and brilliance of Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi. We honor his memory as a national hero and guardian of Nigeria's rich cultural heritage.

As we bid farewell to a great visionary who has left an indelible mark on our nation, we are reminded to carry forward his spirit of unity and strive toward the ideals that the Nigerian flag symbolizes.

Michael Taiwo Akinkunmi may no longer be with us in person, but his legacy will forever inspire and guide the Nigerian people as we forge ahead towards a brighter future.

In your headline, why do you choose to qualify that man of high repute who had worked rigorously for the stand and formation of what we have today as Nigeria with such a vulgal and unsavory phrase?

Do you really understand the biblical history of the "Prodigal Son"

You hailed him though in the body of your story!
Thanks for your comments, Abdulsamad. Your points are under review. Thanks.

To address your concern, it is important to note that the term "prodigal" has multiple meanings. In addition to its more commonly known meaning of wasteful or wayward, it can also be interpreted as generous or abundantly giving.
