Eid Al-Adha in UDUS: The Sound of Sheeeew Goes Silent
Muhammad Habibat Sani (Ummu Yasmeen)
There is nothing more delightful than waking up on the morning of Eid Al-Adha to the sweet aroma of sizzling meat frying on the fire. The sound of Sheeeew emanating from every corner of the neighborhood is a symphony of joy that signals the start of a day filled with family, friends, and feasting.
Unless, of course, you happen to be a student at UDUS.
For those of us who couldn't make it back home due to the fuel hike or the far distance from our hometowns, this year's Eid is a silent affair best reserved for nostalgic daydreams. As our friends regale us with tales of how much meat they devoured or how many sheep they slaughtered, we can only imagine the sumptuous feast that we've missed.
"I can't imagine missing the sound of the Sheeeew of the frying meat," one student tells his friend, wiping away a tear of longing. "It's like missing the national anthem at a football match."
Another student nods wistfully. "I heard that one of my classmates from Kebbi ate so much meat that he started bleating like a sheep himself. I wish I could have witnessed that."
Meanwhile, those of us who are left behind console ourselves with the remnants of our meager food supplies, wondering how on earth we'll survive until the next meal and eating noodles (Indomie). The silence of our surroundings is only interrupted by the occasional grumble of our stomachs, a mournful reminder of what we've lost.
But fear not, dear readers, for we UDUS students are resilient lot. One day, we too shall have the means and the opportunity to experience the joy of Eid in all its glory. Until then, we'll just have to content ourselves with the memories of the Sheeeew that once was and the knowledge that someday, we'll make up for lost time.
And for now, we can always turn up the volume on our phones and blast some sheep bleating sounds to simulate the experience.
Happy Eid Al-Adha, UDUS!
