NMGS Holds Orientation For New Members

Amidst the tedious and busy week with a few days to first semester examinations of the 2022/2023 academic session, the Nigeria Mining and Geoscience Society (NMGS) Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto Chapter has organized an orientation program for its new members which is held at the Department of Geology on Monday 17th July 2023.
The orientation which specifically targeted fresh students of the Department of Geology has the attendance of the Departmental Examinations Officer and Head of Laboratories, and some important issues were discussed like Career talk, Life on campus, Study Skills, Drug Abuse, Rules and regulations of examinations, and laboratories.
“For no reason should you enter an exam or test for somebody else, please avoid it,” says Mr. Habib Ibrahim, Department's Examination Officer while he elaborated on the rules and regulations guiding examinations in the Department and the University at large.
While sharing some insights on how to attain academic excellence, he gave a brief guide on how to calculate GPA and CGPA.
The second speaker, Mr. Hassan Hamidu, the Head of Laboratories, stressed career talks with the audience as he mentioned some of the fields students studying the course can major such as hydrogeology, geophysics, geochemistry, and others.
He also highlighted some positive prospects in studying Geology like working in the oil and mining industry. “In a nutshell, Geology can accommodate you in many ways,”
Speaking with Vanguard Press after the event, Abdulmumin Aliyu, the President of the association said he was excited about the high turnout of students while he spoke on the rationale for holding the event.
“The essence of organizing the orientation is that exams start in one week and most of our students especially the 100 level student don’t know about the examination rules and conducts, so we think organizing things like this will help them in the fast coming exams, we have to encourage them and given them all what they will need for this upcoming exams.”
Students React, Laud Students' Body
Muhammad Abdulsalam, a 100-level student who attended the program was sitting happily after the orientation ended. He shared his thought and experience during the event.
“We get to know a lot about the department that we didn't know before such as the laws of NMGS and the benefits we can get in the department and even outside the department and how to build a good CGPA right from UG1,”
When approached by a Vanguard Press Reporter for his reactions to the program, Shittu, a fresh student and an attendee of the event showed excitement and motivation while he stood confidently to voice out his thought about the orientation.
“Seriously I enjoyed the orientation and we learned a lot because they exposed us to the field and taught us various aspects of geology like hydrogeology, geochemistry, geophysics and also I learned how to build a good CGPA right from 100L as I was also taught how to calculate CGPA."
Shittu also noted that the lecturers urge new students to involve in self-reading and discipline themselves.
