Column with Legal Queen: Coup d'État: When Student Politics Take a Comical Turn
By Muhammad Habibat Sani
In the chaotic whirlwind that has swept through our beloved institution, one can't help but wonder, as we are left scratching our heads pondering if this is a coup or a perplexing theatrical performance.
It seems the leaders we constitutionally choose are dissolved faster than sugar in hot tea, and the reasons for this dissolution remain as mysterious as a magician's disappearing.
Unionism, meant to invigorate and fortify us for the struggles that lie ahead, appears to be taking us on a ride through a funhouse of uncertainty. It now feels like a mythical creature hidden in the farthest depths of our imagination.
Rules are broken, accusations are made, and the whole process becomes a comedy of errors. But what will be the grand finale of this performance? Will the embezzled funds miraculously reappear, or will they be swallowed up in the archives of student politics, lost forever?
Let's entertain the notion that everyone involved may have collectively ignored the rulebook, engaged in wrong legislative proceedings, and hurled wrongful accusations like co-wives. But, has the wisdom therein the saying, "amputation is not an antidote to headache" dried up as the puddle under Jatua Bridge does during dry season? What, pray tell, is the grand finale of this investigation? Is it a confounding magic trick or a spectacular fireworks display?
Let's take a flashback, the Student Representative Assembly (SRA) bravely raised its voice for accountability, and suddenly, we witnessed a showdown between the S.U executives and SRA. Investigations were launched, the Zero tolerance for corruption got the "shushed up" pet on the shoulder like a curious child getting silenced before pointing out that an uncle forgot to zip up properly, and then, like a rabbit from a hat, the Caretaker Committee (CTC) appeared, emerging from the shadows to take the stage.
With their sudden appearance and the rushed disappearance of the Students' Union with its luggage filled with questionable status-branded fabrics, it feels as if we've fallen into the pages of Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland".
Need we refer back here to the wiped-out history of similar appearance and disappearance that played out at the shore of the former Students' Union which captained the former Caretaker Committee into the Kwakwalawa of UDUS governance? Read that again, history sure is playing pranks on us, all.
What wondrous adventures await us under the leadership of this new CTC? Only time will reveal the true extent of this peculiar journey.
