NACJ-UDUS Congress: Editorial Training Takes Center Stage

Abdulraheem Muhammed Olarewaju reports,

In a commendable endeavor to bolster journalistic integrity and sharpen the skills of aspiring journalists, the National Association of Campus Journalists, Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto Chapter, had on Sunday 1st of October, 2023 convened its first congress of the semester, placing a strong focus on editorial training.

Spearheaded by Abdulrasheed Hammed, a seasoned and award-winning investigative journalist, the training delved into the core ethics of journalism, underscoring the paramount importance of maintaining truthfulness and transparency.

The training highlighted the pivotal role of editors within a newsroom. Editors were emphasized as key players in scrutinizing and refining submitted reports. Their responsibilities encompass rectifying grammatical errors and identifying instances of plagiarism in written articles slated for publication, Abdulrasheed stated during his talks.

In an interview with one of the members, Ismaila Biliaminu expressed gratitude for the association's initiative, saying, "Though the training was brief, I believe it could have been more extensive. I commend the association for organizing this session to educate us on the intricacies of journalism. While concepts like evidence keeping and reporting, accountability journalism, and holding leaders to task are not entirely unfamiliar to me, today's session served as a wakeup call".

The president of the association, Abdulwasiu Olokooba also shared insights during an interview, stating, "It is imperative to remember the fundamental objectives of righteous journalism and to rigorously scrutinize the work of reporters before it goes to print".

The congress was characterized by impassioned discussions on journalism and knowledge-sharing. The training concluded with an emphasis on the importance of meticulous record-keeping as a safeguard against potential intimidation or legal action aimed at silencing journalists. The event left attendees equipped with enhanced skills and a deeper appreciation for the ethical standards that underpin the field of journalism.
