SCSN Holds Annual Orientation, Awards Students For Academic Excellence

The Student Chemical Society of Nigeria (SCSN) Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto chapter has held its annual orientation for newly admitted students and presented a certificate of academic excellence and appreciation for respective students on Friday 21st of July, 2023 at MH3 Lecture Hall, Main Campus. 

The program started with an opening prayer by one of the students from the Department, followed by a welcome address by the Head of the Department of Pure and Environmental Chemistry, Prof. A.M Sokoto. 

“You are welcome and lucky to be admitted to one of the most serious and organidepartmentsment in the institution," Prof. Sokoto said.

The Head of the Department of Energy And Applied Chemistry, Dr. M.L Muhammad orientated the students on the possible careers in chemistry as a field of study saying, "As a chemist, your service is needed in every field in the whole world".

As the event goes on, one of the lecturers in the Department, Mrs. Hafsat Bature presented on the topic “Challenges faced by women in the education system” where she highlighted some of the challenges encountered by the female gender during their educational pursuit.

Mal. A.S Yelwa, UG2 Coordinator explained to the students how CGPA is being calculated in the institution. 

“Now You know how it is being done is now left for you to decide the class of degree you want but avoid third and pass degrees,” he said.

Celebrating Academic Excellence

Certificates of academic excellence were presented to 38 students of the two Departments who earned at least 4.5 out of 5.00 CGPA in the last academic session and also the students that participated as tutors in the association's tutorial classes held from the 12th of June to July 2nd, 2023.

Prof. M.G Liman, the examinations officer for the Faculty of Chemical and Life Sciences cautioned the students to shun any form of examination misconduct to avoid the penalties ahead. 

Another Lecturer in attendance was Prof. Dabai from the Department who said that “We lecturers are always happy when we see our students excel academically because it only shows that we are doing our job effectively”.

A vote of thanks was done by the SCSN UDUS Chapter President, Murtala Siraj Jangebe where he expressed his profound gratitude to the staff of the Department for their parental and academic support, and also the association's executive members for their hardworking and tireless efforts in the development of not only the association but also the University at large.

Mal. Shamsudeen Yahaya, the club's staff adviser gave a closing remark noting that “Wherever you find yourself, try and be a good ambassador of the Department and table all your reports and complaints to the appropriate channel for proper solutions and recommendations”.
