Special Report: Students Sacrifice Home for Education Over Fuel Price Surge

Image
Muhammad Habibat Sani writes In the heart of Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto, a prevailing struggle has emerged as students grapple with the dire consequences of soaring petrol prices. What was once a routine journey home has now transformed into a daunting challenge, leaving students torn between their pursuit of education and their longing for family. On Monday, May 29, President Bola Tinubu announced during his inaugural speech the removal of the petrol subsidy. This decision, aimed at addressing long-standing economic challenges, has caused a surge in fuel prices across the country,  Since the removal of the subsidy, the cost of public transportation has doubled in many areas. Students who rely on buses to commute to and from the university now face the burden of increased transportation costs. This adds an additional financial strain on their already limited budgets, making it harder for them to meet their educational expenses. Adamu Hannat, a 300-level microbiology...

Concerns: Inside Campus: Rich in Thoughts and Exposure

Image
By Abdullahi Idris At a time we all thought and wondered what was stopping us from having the 'rush' people abroad are having. You Actually can't plant Potatoes and harvest Yam, it's crystal clear in the prediction of such circumstances. I'm a resident of Jubril Aminu hostel and from observation, I'm writing this. We have some loose academic pollutants that use pleasure to contaminate the environment with great satisfaction. With all the problems, we as people can't be how those abroad are until we board ourselves with the reality and change. We have to negotiate with our thinking and stop the act of using unnecessary means in restroom management. Why use Nylon for God's sake, polluting the hostel-laundry-free space. Whereas the restrooms are intact and water-free from taps. Provided the management sees to the daily regular maintenance activities within the environment. And these acts are not only within the hostel alone but even around the halls of le...

Column with Legal Queen: Coup d'État: When Student Politics Take a Comical Turn

Image
By Muhammad Habibat Sani In the chaotic whirlwind that has swept through our beloved institution, one can't help but wonder, as we are left scratching our heads pondering if this is a coup or a perplexing theatrical performance.   It seems the leaders we constitutionally choose are dissolved faster than sugar in hot tea, and the reasons for this dissolution remain as mysterious as a magician's disappearing.  Unionism, meant to invigorate and fortify us for the struggles that lie ahead, appears to be taking us on a ride through a funhouse of uncertainty. It now feels like a mythical creature hidden in the farthest depths of our imagination. Rules are broken, accusations are made, and the whole process becomes a comedy of errors. But what will be the grand finale of this performance? Will the embezzled funds miraculously reappear, or will they be swallowed up in the archives of student politics, lost forever? Let's entertain the notion that everyone involved may have collec...
