Disconnected: A Reflection on the Impact of Losing My Smartphone

Image
By Abdullateef Bala Usman On Saturday evening October 20th, 2023, I unwillingly bid my phone farewell as it embarked on an unforeseen journey, one that would last until October 30, 2023. This sudden separation was a disconcerting experience for someone like me, a student whose daily life revolved around the convenience of a smartphone. Approximately 90% of my daily activities were conducted through that trusty device. It was a fateful night, a night in which I inadvertently transformed my phone into an unwitting mattress, leading to its ultimate surrender. When the sun rose the next day, I was greeted by a stark, unresponsive black screen. Panic and anxiety quickly consumed me as I realized that I had lost a vital connection to my academic life, my social network, and the online classes that had become my lifeline. Desperate for information about my lectures and assignments, I had no choice but to walk to a friend's hostel in the hopes of gathering any available updates. I felt iso...

Folic acid: Linchpin of Red Blood Cells Formation

Image
By Wonderful Adegoke The origin of folic acid's role in red blood cell formation is rooted in the rich soil of scientific discovery. Starting with a simple observation of anemia in those with folic acid deficiency, scientists followed the trail of clues to uncover its essential role in keeping our red blood cells healthy and robust. It's a tale of discovery that spans decades and continents and has changed the way we understand nutrition and health. If you think about the most crucial things for a healthy body, you might think of food, water, or sleep. But there's another, often overlooked, key component- folic acid, without which our bodies would not function properly. Firstly identified in the 1930s, when researchers discovered that a deficiency in diet led to anemia. They named it 'folic acid' due to its foliage- green leafy vegetables like spinach, lettuce, and kale. Later, scientists learned that folic acid is also found in other foods like citric fruits, bea...

VANGUARD POETRY: Sound of my ancestors

Image
By: Abdulrahman Tanimu A vessel that wonders, who would understand his sound. It's a sound, not from the ancestors but environment. He scowl and squeal, what about my progeny? Which sound would they make? Would it be of the ancestors or the environment? He said to his voice in devotion, my ancestors' voice it is. He was not ready for a relationship. Alas, relationships may lead to conjugality. With that comes progeny, hmmm It's hard to think about progeny in the world state. Would they be Godly or UnGodly, is that question valid? MH2 was lit, I saw a luminary shining through my heart. She was sited but you could tell of her height. I could not stop staring, of course, the luminance is enthralling. I spoke to my heart with a voiceless sound. This lady must be very special to all around her. My heart says to me, "Is beauty a criterion for loving and marriage". I answered, maybe I should let her pass. I don't really know her, just her luminosity. Walking on the...

Of Journalism, Public Relations, And Broadcast: The Most Prestigious

Image
By: Kamaldeen Aishat Prestigious is the quality of how good the reputation of something or someone is. The fields of journalism, public relations, and broadcast all play important roles in society. However, there are some debates about which of these fields is most prestigious. Some argue that journalism is the most prestigious, due to its vital role in providing information and holding those in power accountable. Others may argue that public relations or broadcast are more prestigious, due to their focus on influencing public opinion and providing entertainment. In this critique, I will argue that journalism is the most prestigious field, due to its unique ability to inform and shape public opinion. Investigative journalism plays a vital role in holding power accountable, as demonstrated by the Watergate scandal. The investigative reporting of Woodward and Bernstein exposed corruption at the highest levels of government, leading to the resignation of President Nixon. The Waterga...

Wine vs. Beer: The Alcoholic Puzzle

Image
Abdullateef Bala Usman In a university lecture hall, a seemingly straightforward question sparked a passionate debate: "Is wine or beer alcoholic?" The question which was originally posed during a food Microbiology class, quickly escalated into a complex and spirited discussion. At the outset, the lecture progressed smoothly. But things took a dramatic turn when the lecturer brought up examples of alcoholic and non-alcoholic foods. This led to a pivotal moment when a curious student asked if wine was alcoholic. The classroom was suddenly alive with animated chatter and debate. It turned into a stage for opposing viewpoints. On one side were those arguing that both wine and beer were prohibited in Islam. On the other side were students advocating for the permissibility of one over the other. What was once a standard Microbiology class transformed into a dynamic debating arena, where students clashed in the name of their beliefs. Science, culture, and spirituality converged i...
